Zeta Tau Alpha's badge was designed in 1899 by Giles Mebane Smith, brother of Founder Frances Yancey Smith.
In 1908, ZTA decided to prohibit the badge from being altered or used as any other form of jewelry.
The founders believed the badge should only be worn over the heart, a guideline still in place today.

This month is Convention; and this year it will be held in New Orleans, LA. This is not the first time a convention was held here. Our 33rd National and 22nd International Convention was held at the Marriott hotel New Orleans, LA June 26-July 1 1976.
Crown Chapter was first introduced in 1983.
Although breast cancer education and awareness is our national philanthropy now it was not our first philanthropic effort. In 1928 ZTA's first effort was the establishment of a health center to benefit rural communities in the Appalachian Mountains of Virgina. Over the years, we have also worked with the Cerebral Palsy Division of the National Society for Crippled Children and Adults, Easter Seals, The ARC, and Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
ZTA started its "Don't Be A Fool/Do Monthly Breast Self-Examinations" campaign on
April 1, 1992. Since then, our members have distributed nearly 10 million BSE shower cards.
